House of Frames

The House of Frames captures both daily activities and the surrounding landscape through corridors and openings.
The corridor is no longer a neutral passage, but a lived space: walking, pausing, and conversing are imbued with meaning.
Openings act as viewfinders, framing not only the landscape but also the residents’ gestures, turning life itself into part of the composition.

The House of Frames is a vessel for both seeing and being seen.
Nature forms the enduring backdrop, while life unfolds as the shifting foreground.
Through the order of frames, the house unites the two—making residents both viewers of the landscape and actors within it.

Viewing platform

Located in the mining landscapes of Southern Norway’s fjord region, this viewing platform is conceived not only as a place to look outward but also as a place of rest and reflection. Beginning as a series of seats, it gradually transforms into a pathway that ultimately culminates in a vantage point—an architectural device for observing the stones and the surrounding terrain.

The Copper Stair

The Copper Stair is a roadside intervention along the Norwegian Scenic Routes in Jøssingfjord, designed as more than a rest stop—it is a crafted transition between infrastructure and landscape. The project reclaims a former rock shelf shaped by mining and road engineering, transforming an obstructed and precarious climb into an accessible sequence of experience. The design centers on a copper stair that rises directly from the parking area, guiding visitors towards an elevated glass brick kiosk, while a public toilet is discreetly embedded within the rock base. This duality—between the grounded, concealed service space and the elevated, transparent destination—forms the core architectural narrative.

材料策略强调与场地地质的对话:铜在时间中由温暖的金属光泽逐渐氧化为绿色铜锈,呼应苔藓坡地与矿产记忆;
Material choices emphasize dialogue with the fjord’s geology: copper, with its time-based transformation from metallic luster to green patina, resonates with the anorthosite cliffs and moss; glass bricks and concrete provide contrast while maintaining visual slenderness against the monumental rock backdrop. The Copper Stair is both path and platform: a structure that frames the fjord’s grandeur, celebrates the passage of time, and respects the dominance of the natural landscape while offering a dignified, accessible encounter with it.

About Atelier Within

At Within Design, “Within” is our guiding methodology: every decision begins with an inner logic—attuning to the pulse of the site, the grain of materials, and the genuine needs of its users. Within clear boundaries, we shape a coherent whole where space, material, function, and experience interdependently sustain one another, with meaning leading form. We embrace the dimension of time, recognizing memory, weathering, and use as continuous processes that allow architecture to unfold new layers of poetry over the years. And at its foundation, inclusion and coexistence: design is rooted in place yet grows in dialogue with nature, culture, and human life, becoming a greenhouse for diverse experiences and future possibilities.

Our design philosophy lies in allowing landscape and architecture to yield to one another, with spatial experience as the sole criterion. I listen with reverence to the whispers of site, material, and user, intervening only with the lightest and most essential touch, ensuring that each gesture carries clarity and purity of value. In a multi-sensory poetic weaving—the warmth of stone, the grain of wood, the play of light and shadow, the echo of footsteps—time’s weathering and the rhythms of the seasons inscribe continuous annotations upon space. Thus, design abandons display for precision and measure; in gentle yet profound tactility, it restores order, allowing elegance to deepen with the passage of years. It does not seek to impress through luxury, but achieves the true beauty of restraint, exactness, and meaning.
