Adaptive Reuse · Mixed-Use Cultural and Commercial Space

This project transforms a dining space in downtown Boston into a community theater, integrating it with an adjacent pizza shop to explore the coexistence of public culture and daily commerce within an existing structure. Guided by the theme of "performance," the design serves not only theatrical productions and public events but also facilitates the building's continuous operation during daily use.

Avoiding demolition and reconstruction, the approach begins with the building's existing materials and components. Through lightweight design interventions, the project reorganizes internal spatial relationships to create new scenarios for use and consumption, all while preserving the space’s original character. Amidst intensifying climate and resource pressures, this low-intervention strategy effectively mitigates construction costs and implementation risks.

The renovated space responds to the demand for public culture in urban life while introducing new possibilities for the existing dining business, allowing commercial and public functions to mutually activate one another. Consequently, the building is no longer a container for a single function, but an evolving urban scene unfolding over time.
