Multi-Family Prototype · Retrofitting Existing Housing Typologies

This project takes the classic Chicago "6-Flat" typology as its subject, addressing the contemporary urban demand for affordable and diverse living modes. While preserving the original structural integrity and economic feasibility of the building, the design re-examines the adaptive potential of this established typology within the context of modern lifestyles.

Grounded in a typical 6-Flat floor plan, the project redesigns spatial divisions, circulation organization, and functional relationships. It introduces flexible unit combinations without increasing architectural complexity. The residence is no longer viewed as a container for static functions, but rather as an adaptable spatial framework capable of evolving alongside changing family structures and living needs.

On a holistic scale, the design envisions the single building as a shared community. By reorganizing the entrance sequence and the public courtyard, the project fosters stronger connections among residents while preserving essential privacy for individual life. This proposal offers a viable pathway for achieving "low-cost retrofitting and high-adaptability living" within existing housing stocks, providing a reference for urban renewal and customized housing demands.
