Strong Lightness Infrastructure Expansion · The Railway Hub as a Climate Device
This project expands the Broken Hill Railway Station in Australia, exploring the functional transformation and performance enhancement of transport architecture under extreme climatic conditions. The design defines the building as a "climate device" situated between the landscape and infrastructure. While fulfilling the complex functions of a transport hub, it actively responds to the arid region's intense solar radiation and frequent sandstorms.
Replacing the concept of a "solid building" with that of a "climate device," we utilize a precision steel structure to reinterpret local traditional craftsmanship, constructing a self-regulating "breathing skin." This approach achieves passive cooling and natural ventilation goals while preserving the region's industrial character. The project not only resolves the complex circulation within the hub but also achieves a high-level synthesis of building performance and formal aesthetics within a harsh natural environment. It represents not just an upgrade in functionality, but a redefinition of the boundaries between humanity, nature, and technology.
